Get Up or Lay Down

When a situation or a series of situations are so painful that you go into emotional shock, they seemingly only offer two options: Get Up or Lay Down. Why not just collapse, falling face first into the myriad of broken pieces of your life? What is the use of holding on? Not just holding on, but using the heat to simultaneously promote growth and healing. The struggle has been unbearable, but somehow we’ve continued in excellence. Issues are insurmountable, yet we find ourselves on the precipice of God’s promises. Hallelujah! To rise is to channel the pain for ones’ own benefit. If one becomes the object of their own focus, self-pity may set in. Rising means that the individual must fix their gaze upon Jesus, endure the influx of emotions, and let the pain fuel their praise.

Who collapses? Those who verbalize faith, but never have taken God at His word, therefore they become defeated in many battles. The believer who gives up is focused on the unbearable feelings, the obstacles, and the “poor me” cantata. I had to stop singing that song. I grew to value my spiritual growth above my feelings.

I will divulge some actions that can empower a believer to GET UP rather than lay down in the struggle for emotional freedom. When hurt leaves you speechless, and trials make bitterness a viable option, try to remember the following:

Don’t Seek Man’s Validation or Approval regarding your hardship!

Not only was Job sick, grieving, and wounded, his friends audaciously and erroneously accused him of wrongdoing before the Lord (Job 22). Some of our friends have the best intentions, yet they do not know how to console us like our Creator God. We should cry out to God. Even if we are not telling God how much we adore Him initially. God wants to hear how much we are hurting. “Jesus, I want to hide and run at the same time, I NEED YOU!” This sort of crying out produces peace. Almost instantly. The presence of the Lord is likened to that of ointment on many wounds. But to get in His presence we often must press our way in past the oppositional forces in life. God validates us with His holy word.

“Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.” Galatians 1:10

Daddy knows that it hurts, whereas others may try to minimize our pain.

“”I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”” John 16:33

Remember What God Has Done Thus Far!

I speak often of the amnesia that befalls many believers. When we are in agony, forgetting that we successfully survived similar situations is a great way to remain stuck. Hallelujah, but when we say to ourselves, “My God saved me from _______, brought me through_______, there is nothing that my God will not do for me!”, our distance to defeat gets greater. The word of God reminds us of who we are. When impossible events in our life hit us like a tidal wave we can cling to the alive and powerful word of God to remember that we are His chosen ones. Yup, there is an abundance of opposition, but there is also a river of living water flowing into us. Glory!

“Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give people in exchange for you, nations in exchange for your life.” Isaiah 43:4

I, yes I, am the one who comforts you.

So why are you afraid of mere humans,

who wither like the grass and disappear?

Yet you have forgotten the LORD, your Creator,

the one who stretched out the sky like a canopy

and laid the foundations of the earth.

Will you remain in constant dread of human oppressors?

Will you continue to fear the anger of your enemies?

Where is their fury and anger now?

It is gone!

Soon all you captives will be released!

Imprisonment, starvation, and death will not be your fate!

For I am the LORD your God,

who stirs up the sea, causing its waves to roar.

My name is the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.

Isaiah 51:12-15

Remember your God-given assignment!

Just as the pressure produces oil from the olive, fire purifies gold, a filter cleanses water, and ironing gets wrinkles out, so suffering manifests the readiness of the believer for Gods’ work. We cannot give up in the battle for our souls because we have work to do in the name Jesus. This work is paramount in Gods kingdom building. Please, brothers and sisters, do not allow what is meant to strengthen you for your assignment to cause you to sit down and shut up. Hallelujah! I will not take down. I will not stop. In fact, I am more determined to conquer, fulfill my kingdom duties, and possess the land in the name Jesus than before.

“Shake yourself from the dust, rise up, O captive Jerusalem; Loose yourself from the chains around your neck, O captive daughter of Zion.” Isaiah 52:2

“’But get up and stand on your feet; for this purpose I have appeared to you, to appoint you a minister and a witness not only to the things which you have seen, but also to the things in which I will appear to you;” Acts 26:16

Even if you thought that you gave up. In the name of Jesus, child of God, GET UP! WAR! Excuse my vernacular, but Satan ain’t got nothing on Our Mighty God!

Lift up your heads, you gates;

be lifted up, you ancient doors,

that the King of glory may come in.

Who is this King of glory?

The Lord strong and mighty,

the Lord mighty in battle.

Lift up your heads, you gates;

lift them up, you ancient doors,

that the King of glory may come in.

Who is he, this King of glory?

The Lord Almighty—

he is the King of glory.

Psalm 24:7-10

First Class

I’m up, I’m up and I’m not coming down

Jesus lifted me, high up off the ground

Under my feet, I cannot hear your sound

Looking for a worthy opponent, none was found

Don’t you know, the Lord God is mighty in battle

That’s why your perturbed, cages rattled

Come one way, flee seven ways, on your saddle

Beating demons, I will not spare the paddle

Yeah it stung but the sting couldn’t last

No longer consumed with hurt from the past

Who the Son set free, is free indeed, I’m free at last

Soaring in His glory, flying first class

Amen! God allows us to struggle for lots of reasons. One reason is so that we can show the power of God to others. I thank God for the purposes of our pain.
